Today, the presence of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines is very low and has not improved in the last 10 years. This is why we feel it is more important than ever to celebrate 11 February, which is dedicated worldwide to giving visibility to the work of female researchers and scientists, thus providing female role models who can contribute to the choice of these areas as professional careers. Also to learn about the different factors that affect the current situation of women in STEM areas and to promote practices that favour their elimination and help to achieve gender equality in the scientific field.

Throughout the month of February, almost 40 female researchers, supported by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Vigo, will give 65 face-to-face and virtual talks in 35 Galician schools. The New Materials group, as a multidisciplinary group with presence in a Technological Research Centre, wanted to participate more actively in this initiative and our researchers Julia Serra, Laura González and Sara Pérez will give several talks about their work and about the role of women in science and technology.
